media conglomerate

Walt Disney Company seems to be the largest media conglomerated with many other companies. They own many different things throughout the world. They are known for their movies, television channels, amusement parks, and studios. This company is seen as one of the most popular company because of how much they earn and how the promote their media and entertainment to the media. Walt Disney Company now owns many companies. They started as a animation studio and now has many studios and amusement parks all around the world. They even have their own official mascot which is very well known to the whole world. Not many companies can say that they are known by one mascot anywhere in the world. To be able to have everyone recognize Mickey Mouse must say how large Walt Disney is. They have bought bought many companies along the way of their success making them one of the biggest media conglomerate.

Potential problems that are seen within this company is that there are ownership issues. When the company buys out another, there is can cause many problems in what they want to do with their products or ideas. Other problems that might exist are that some might not agree with certain ideas to go out to the public. Because every company wants to attract more of the public, everyone has their own opinion on everything that they want to show. The larger the company, the more issues it arises within the company itself and the public.

  1. I agree with you, Meg. I was watching Disney channel with my 7 year old cousin and I've noticed that all their commercials are about Disney. It's either about a new show coming up, a new movie, on either Disney Channel, in theaters or on ABC/ABC Family (which both Disney owns).

I agree what you have said about the potential problems. Every Disney or ABC movie I've seen has all the same ideals or messages. I also agree with products, I mean, just look at the Disney store in the Rockaway mall, it's been there for ages with no sign of closing down.

For the many people that watch ABC or ABC Family, they see commercials for Disney Channel and/or upcoming Disney movies or shows. It's incredible the way this one conglomerate just revolves around itself.

Even South Park started to make fun of Disney with the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cirus. It's everywhere, and you know how everyone talks about the subliminal messages in the old Disney movies, such as the Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid.

But that's what is so great about Disney, they're so good at what they do, they attract every age group. It attracts little kids for the cute little story/characters in the movie/shows and it attracts teenagers through the age of parents because they might want to see the plot or just to see what subliminal messages are in this type of media this time.

  2. ABC Disney is by far, one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. It is a fully functioning, in-house organization that does everything from producing ideas for movies to making character dinnerware sets. Disney itself broadcasts different Disney channels in 14 different countries. Two huge themeparks in America bring in enough revenue alone to keep the company afloat. They even went to the point of buying a town outside of Orlando, and completely shaped it into a "fantasy land" for people that live there to experience everyday. Not to mention, ABC itself and it's primetime shows compete with the other broadcasters as well. To be completely honest, I love Disney, mainly because it's a start from scratch, American Dream-based success story. Or maybe its because of the Disney/Pixar movies that I can never get enough of.
Too be honest, I really don't see Disney being the giant media conglomerate that would mold and shape the news, or create a false information about topics. I actually could never see Disney having a negative aspect at all, but that may just be great PR. Who would ever suspect Mickey Mouse to do something wrong? But maybe that's the real problem here. Maybe Disney does have that potential to falsify media, and completely buy out other conglomerates and media firms, and becoming an even bigger media superpower.
If thats the case, I think we'll all be ok. I'll take being forced to watch Finding Nemo and and Monsters INC. over which designer made the Mrs. President's dress

  3. Disney is definetley one of todays largest company's without a doubt. To respond to Michaels response I don't think Disney could be a shady company nor would they even try to be. Professionally it would be a stupid move on their part. Not just because in a business manner but also in a morale manner it'd be wrong. Especially since their main target audience is children. Any wrong doings and they would get one law suit after another from parents.
In response to alice's blog I'd agree that Disney is huge however I believe that Apple is bigger. The way I see it electronics make more money than toys, movies, and amusement parks. Apple has mac computers, ipods, iphones, and accesories as well. We are living in the digital age now and 5 years ago it would be rare for me to see an elementary schooler with a cd walkman. Nowadays I see parents at my job buting 8 year olds an ipod touch which has all the capabilities of the iphone except its not a phone. An iphone is almost the same thing as having a computer. On top of that everywhere you go there is always somebody with an ipod. The accesories with ipod never stop. So many companies are partnered up with apple so they can have their charge docks, portable speakers, etc be compatible with ipods.
As far as problems with apple being a conglomerate I dont think it would really effect me too much. To me they already are and the most effect I've felt is me owning an ipod. nothing more

  5. Disney is responsible for me breaking three ribs and fracturing my leg in my unsuccessful attempt to dive out my window with a rug and fly. I hate them.

I completely disagree with Michael in his saying that there isn’t anything wrong with Disney. They do contribute positively, but they’re a corporation. All corporations are self-serving. That’s their purpose. They’re there to make a profit. Disney has a niche with which to make one.

Is it really good that Disney bought Pixar? Many of the Pixar directors, artists, and writers were all Disney rejects. What does that say about Disney? If you put too many ideas in one place, then you’re going to get like-minded people and send out like-minded messages. Creativity and diversity are going to be run down. And that’s in the same industry!

That’s the problem with conglomerates. You have a massive company that basically has reach in every industry, and so when ideas come in conflict with one another – the ones that don’t serve their interests are shot down. The messages become limited in meaning.

In a way, blogs and (strictly) online news organizations are a response to that. Now we have a million different messages going out from a thousand different sources. But even they’re being bought out by the larger conglomerates.

    Oh well.

  6. Alice, i feel as though everything that you said about the business perspective i will agree with. I feel as though I must disagree with potential problems.

I have to say those are the smallest problems that we have to worry about. How about this for a huge problem they pretty much have a monopoly on the whole children's market. Although I am not a Disney hater, I have to say by the American standards they are very close to that border line of a monopoly for any type of business.

But as long as they are "friendly" and "caring" Disney who can do no wrong, why would anyone try to stop them?

  7. agree that disney is one of the largest conglomerates known, but i do not see them having problems with deciding what to do with potential investments, Disney buys up companies all the time and yet somehow still makes it amazing. They are very good at making themselves known and you can not go anywhere with out seeing something tat resembles a bit of Disney. I cant even watch tv without seeing a commercial about a park, movie, or cruise all from Disney. I think this is a great way to get their image out there because it's in your face all of the time. And with every large corporation there are going to be problems, whether it is to do with the staff, the rides being unsafe, the actors doing things that are seen as wrong or simply making movies that some might disagree with. No matter what there will always be a problem with something because no one is every happy with everything. If someone finds something wonderful then someone else finds in awful, so until the world is perfect place every company is going to deal with difficulties.

  8. I really hate to go on and repeat what everyone else has said, but I don't have a choice. This is the only blog I can respond to..

However, I'd like to make a point in regards to the "celebrities" that Disney has founded.

Miley Cyrus, lets say. She has created her own person and figure, "Hannah Montana." That particular name is related to Disney no matter what- Hannah. Disney. They just go together.

If Miley does something wrong in the media- as her own self being- it seems to get directed back to Disney.

"Disney star, Hannah Montana.....blah blah blah." No matter what "Miley" does, she just cannot lose her connection to Disney.

Parents of young children make comments about how Disney can showcase such a star who in reality is a "16-year-old slut," seriously?

So, is Disney really as great as it is made out to be? By hiring such teenagers to play the roles on a "kids show?"

Should Disney be at fault for the actions their stars make outside of their "Disney figure?"

I truly have no idea anymore..Disney, Miley, Hannah Montana. All different things/people in reality- but always linked together.

    Should it be that way?
